Energy and tranquility. Movement and stillness. These opposites speak to each other in this painting as the history of Laurel whispers in my ear. Where did Laurel’s modern buildings come from? When was its boom time, and when did its downtown flourish? Given that horses were a major mode of transportation and work here not so long ago, it is natural to imagine their presence in downtown Laurel. But on the roof? Here I play with the interaction of reality and fantasy, again juxtaposing the solidity of the buildings with the spirited energy of the horses frolicking in the sky.
While the monochrome woodblock print Two Horses Under a Cherry Tree fails to showcase the colorful beauty of cherry blossoms, I have added the pink blossoms to balance the vitality of the two powerful steeds.
