In the original Kyosai woodblock print, the white heron fills up the entire space. I love the strength of the heron’s presence. The design is a delightful mix of negative and positive space, predominantly black and white with the smallest touch of yellow on its legs, beak, and eye. If you look closely at the original print, you can see that the bird’s feathers are embossed in the paper, another subtle touch that thrills me to no end.

As I studied the heron print, I realized the vertical lines of the falling rain resemble the columns of the Museum. Watching from the porch of the Rogers-Green House, we see our bird in the rain poetically merge with the columns of the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art, whose vertical lines also repeat, like the rainfall. It almost seems as though the heron has walked along the street and through the yards of the Historic District in Laurel.
