Each time I visit Laurel, I am welcomed into this cozy cottage behind the Rogers-Green House. A feeling of warmth permeates the tiny structure. Approaching the house from its meandering brick walkway to its enveloping porch and through its wide front door, I am invited into the spacious hallway, whisked into the kitchen for creativity and companionship, and invited to share a glass of red wine.
Because of my personal connection to this place and my gratitude for the opportunity to get to know Laurel through my work for the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art, I wanted to bring an extra-special sense of beauty and joy to this painting. I drew inspiration from Utagawa Hiroshige’s Fireworks at Ryogoku, where the fireworks display celebrates an autumn evening in Japan in 1858. Here, the open kitchen door looks out into the hallway and bedroom, adorned with stars and fireworks. I added the boatman and his boat in the distance to introduce a bit of mystery and intrigue!
