“Les Fleurs Tropicales”

Whenever I see a passion flower I am struck by its inherent beauty, movement and form. The delicate image of the flower belies its hearty nature. This flower is, in fact, perfection.

Orchidee - Orchid - Orchidaceae

The orchid is nature's way of saying "You are beautiful." This yellow and lavender bloom calls us into its universe, and lets us know that all will be well with the world.

Neomarica gracilis (Herb.) sprague + Bégonia 'Raddi'- Begonia 'Raddi' - Begonia maculata 'raddi'

6 × 13 in.

These two flowers were chosen by the curator Christina Chirouze Montengro to stay together rather than separate them into two paintings. With their common colors, textures and spots(!), I think they work quite well together, don't you?

Passiflora vitifolia - Red Passion Flower - Passiflora vitifolia

Passiflora vitifolia - Red Passion Flower - Passiflora vitifolia

Here I have abstracted out the red passion flower to its basic shape and form. The color red is strong and bright, and the outline shaper of the petals is dramatic.

Cyclanthaceae - "Red Stem Plant" - Cyclanthaceae

SOLD

12×5 in.

I personally named this plant the "Red Stem Plant" because a) it was really hard for me to identify it and find more information on it, and b) it is THE most exotic plant I painted for this series on tropical plants and c) the stem really IS red! It's crazy!

I love the shape of the trumpet flowers and how they hang over your head like a blessing. They are so dramatic in their presence, their elegance surrounds you as you become part of their environment.

Coffee Arabica - Caféier d'Arabie - Coffea arabica #1

10.5 × 10.5 in.

Finally we are on to the Coffee Arabica paintings! This is what the whole series is about: the coffee plant, its beauty, its blooms and its beans. A beautiful plant which produces a beautiful food for our souls.

This 2020 painting on silk, Coffee Arabica - Caféier d'Arabie - Coffea arabica #1, was exhibited first in Paris. On white silk, the color testing chart is included in the finished artwork

The coffee flower is so delicate and pure white and inspiring. I brought the density of the colors found in the tropical forest into this painting, and the heavy charmeuse silk makes the leaves glisten with the heavy morning dew.

We might say that this silk painting is a little more expressive, a little more free, with a little more movement in the design than the other tropical flower paintings in this series. One has the feeling that the breeze is gently blowing through the flowers making them vibrate, attracting the insects that will allow them to reproduce and continue the life cycle of the plant. The beautiful charmeuse silk also vibrates with the dark lavender field that the coral coffee flower rests on.

10 x 12 in.

Just to be perfectly clear, I need you to understand that ALL coffee flowers are pure white. A beautiful, soft, velvety pure white. My representations of the tropical flowers are invigorated with colors that do not match nature's gifts.

This painting, the last in the series, is quite different from the others. It is even more stylized, and has been taken out of any recognizable connection to the tropical forests which inspired this body of work.
