Matisse and Me

When I visited New York recently, my friend Becky invited me to see the newly curated exhibit of The Red Studio at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). Thank you, Becky!

I present to you: The Red Studio, by Henri Matisse

Over the years, Henri Matisse’s The Red Studio has been known by a number of names: Panneau Rouge (Red Panel), The Artist’s Studio, The Studio, and L’Atelier, all describing the place that was so dear to Henri as he blossomed in his new studio located just outside Paris. Created in 1911, this painting lived a long, and for many years, unremarkable life.

But for this artist, The Red Studio has been a touchstone of inspiration, guidance, and development for most of my adult life. For 50 years, I’ve been intimately attached to and happily involved with this painting.

Countless times I have stood before this artwork, which is a massive 6 x 7¼ feet, becoming completely immersed in it, overcome with a sense of reverence and awe, and learning from this painting, this master, what line, color and form mean—to Matisse and to me.

Why? What exactly is it that inspires me about this particular painting?

-That red color : Venetian!

.-The seemingly sketched aspect of the painting, which, I am sure, Matisse struggled and struggled with and worked and re-worked, and which was certainly not as “off the cuff” as it appears.

-The way the yellow underpainting glows through the spaces between the red, creating not a line, but the absence of a line. A work of magic; an extraordinary creation.

The grandfather clock stands guard in the quiet room. The artworks in progress, or completed, are lined up on the floor, the wall, the table—everywhere. Sculpture, ceramics, paintings . . . so much creative output Matisse had!

I’m hesitant to read or watch too many interpretations of Matisse’s work, lest they disrupt my very intimate relationship with him. But if you are interested in this topic, I suggest looking at the MoMA press page for this exhibit, which is succinct and informative.

I also urge you to see the Curator’s discussion of The Red Studio’s underpainting and Matisse’s final addition of the Venetian red paint before he considered the work finished.

But back to my personal experience with Matisse. Athens Art & Frame wrote in a featured artist interview with me in March 2021, “Henri Matisse is a primary influence for René, who says ‘His brevity of lines and use of color has taught me much more than I ever learned in college.’ Everyday beauty is the subject of much of René’s work, which she makes to “help others see what is in their everyday environment with new eyes.”

L'Église Saint-Merri by René Shoemaker

My 2014 painting of a woven chair I discovered at the Église Saint-Merri in Paris reflects a bit of Matisse influence in the confidence of the lines and in the saturated color red. I have studied Matisse’s drawn lines up close, devouring his process, his confident hand, and his wild colors. What I learn from studying his paintings and drawings sinks deep into my psyche, to be released when I, in turn, stand before my own blank “canvas.”

.The MoMA exhibit was set up quite nicely, with the room laid out as if you were in the studio (like my first solo exhibit in 2001) while looking around at the physical things that inspired Matisse.

There are two more galleries that make up the exhibit; one presents a history of the physical painting, relating where it has been and the places it has traveled (and who refused ownership of it!). The most interesting part of this history is that The Red Studio painting graced the wall of a ballroom for many years. (There is still hope for all the art I have exhibited in cafés and restaurants, don’t you think?)

The third room is a collection of Matisse artwork that MoMA, The National Gallery of Denmark (where the exhibit will travel to next), and others own, gathered together for a brief review of related work.

Ahh Matisse, won’t you come back and visit me? Please?

“The thing is, it is very courageous,” says Anny Aviram, senior painting conservator, of Matisse’s act of quickly covering his canvas in red, thereby creating a very modern painting that was really like no other.

The Doors of Athens - Poster and Art Release

What makes you fond of your hometown or your alma mater? I think about this question often and I'm curious to know your opinions is on this subject. (Hit "reply" - let me know!)

I've made it my life mission to uncover this mystery, and as a result, I am so excited to share with you a project I've been working on for months: The Doors of Athens!

The Doors of Athens is a multi-product program I have been diligently creating since midsummer, and it is finally here, ready to share with you and the world, just in time for the holidays!

Short on time? Scroll down to the end to see the big reveal!

...or read on, if you want to hear the whole story.

For December and January, I'll only be in Athens for a short 6 weeks, but you know how much I love Athens. In the heart of Northeast Georgia, Athens was a location of safety and stability for my wandering 20-something self. Its history runs deep, and every one of us whom the city has touched has a unique and personal experience with it. Established concurrently with the University of Georgia in the early 1800s, Athens is a historic yet progressive city with a small-town feel. The 20 square blocks of downtown Athens host a collection of unique eateries, gift shops, art stores, boutiques, vintage shops, bars, music venues, and much more, attracting students, townspeople, and visitors alike. The motto “Shop local!” becomes more relevant and stronger every year, and is exactly what Athens needs to keep it vibrant and thriving; i.e., local small businesses.

To honor my beloved hometown and share the love, I have created a poster featuring 16 small businesses that are unique to Athens. As a special introduction, I am offering the first 100 posters, locally silk screened by hand, and signed by the artist (that’s me!), on my website and at a few locations around town (to be determined - I'll let you know where soon). I have poured my heart and soul into this project, and I hope it will be as meaningful to you as it is to me.

Since I began my art career, my artistic output has focused on the question of “What makes a place feel good?” My goal is to share the uniqueness of places, focusing on that which people tend to ignore when passing by.

Often when people are scurrying down the street, thinking of their destination, they get involved in their own thoughts and fail to observe their surroundings. Yet one of Athens’ treasures is its collection of interesting entrances—environments you recognize but may never consciously perceive. Transitioning from the public to the private sphere, from the outdoors to the interior, from the grand to the intimate, enables you to share a space with those you love or explore a totally new location.

My goal in creating this new art series is to bring attention to everyday experiences, the beauty of our town, and our affection for this place.

When I first heard the phrase place attachment theory from Madeline Blankenship of the Get Artistic program hosted by Creature Comforts Brewery, images of my beloved Athens immediately began to swirl in my head. This poster and exhibit were born at that moment. The exhibit aims to highlight the joy we experience when visiting our favorite businesses after our pandemic confinement, when we are free to move about again. I have highlighted my favorite businesses of Athens with their delightful architecture and inviting entranceways, and created, not only fine art paintings, but a poster for sharing, enjoying, and giving as gifts.

The Doors of Athens exhibition of original contemporary art paintings on silk will open December 10th at Creature Comforts Brewery in downtown Athens. I look forward to seeing you there!

Every Step of the Way

I find it so interesting that often when you read an artist's bio, look at their webpage, and see all their qualifications, it all seems so easy. It looks like they popped out of the womb as an accomplished artist. And it all seems so matter-of-fact that they are where they are in the world today.

For me, I find that every little step of the way—every “first”—is a moment to be celebrated. First class in art school. First exhibit in a gallery. First webpage. First exhibit in a museum. First exhibit in Paris. First residency. Each one is a new opportunity to share my art with the world.

Here I am, sitting at a desk in a secluded cottage with my mind as my only companion. And I just discovered that I am now considered a “Fellow”—my first designation as such.

Finding joy in the everyday; seeking shapes in the physical world; finding connections between the exterior and interior psyche: this is my mission.

The way I move forward when working on my art is by responding to what excites me. Which line makes my heart beat faster? Which color makes me dream all night? Which ray of sunlight inspires me?

I'm always excited to share my creations with you. I invite you to share them with your loved ones, especially during this upcoming holiday season, or as gifts for winter birthdays or other occasions.

1) Fine art prints of Las Flores Tropicales series that was exhibited in Paris this past fall are now available. Choose from the images below and let me know which of the flowers you would like, or go to my online store to make your purchase.

2) Original art is available by clicking here, or of course, just hit 'reply' to this email and let me know what you are looking for.

3) Color, texture and playfulness are all features of the new collection of Silkies that just arrived. These touchable artworks made for small children are very soft, and often become constant companions, like a blankie might be. I think your little ones will adore their gift of a Silkie, which are comforting and educational at the same time.

Adding New Dimensions to My Art

I'll keep this newsletter short today with just three items of note. My artwork and art career have taken on some new dimensions, and I couldn't wait to share them with you! Music, video, and audio recordings are all in store:

1) Ed Cashin of Atlanta, GA was inspired to compose music to accompany my tropical flower paintings. I invite you to click on the links below to listen to two examples.

Which of the two compositions do you like best? I'm intrigued by the different energy that is captured in each piece. They each have their own personality!

2) The Columbus Museum's program "60 Seconds with the Artist" for their virtual museum invited me to discuss the "12th and Broadway, Columbus, Ga" large-scale painting I created for my exhibit "Discovering the Chattahoochee Valley" there in 2015-16. Click here to listen to that interview.

I'm proud to be included with so many accomplished artists in this audio visual series.

Included here is your invitation to our Vernissage (art reception) in Paris:
